Warhammer 40,000: Tacticus beginner guide

Updated 7 September 2026

Tacticus doesn't hand you a full team from a single banner the way most gacha games do — new Characters mostly come from playing content and collecting shards, with a Requisition Drops gacha layered on top for extra copies and newer names. That changes how a reroll and an early-game plan should work here.

Should you reroll?

Rerolling matters less here than in most gacha games, because very few Characters are locked behind a one-time banner pull — most are earned by clearing content and farming their specific shard source over time, so a bad early roll isn't permanent the way it is elsewhere.

The one thing worth targeting on a reroll is your opening Requisition Drops pool and starting Alliance spread, since your first squad will likely be whichever few Characters you happen to unlock fastest.

You'll need to clear the opening tutorial and roughly the first 15 campaign battles before some systems (including code redemption) unlock, so a reroll costs real time here — most players are better off just starting and building around whatever they get.

  1. Push through the tutorial and early campaign regardless — that's what unlocks Arena, Guild Raid, and the code redemption screen.
  2. Don't fixate on one specific Character early; the Ascension system (see the progression guide) means almost anyone can become useful with enough investment.
  3. If you do reroll, look for an opening pool that gives you 3+ Characters from one Alliance — that's what most early same-Alliance modes want.

The Requisition Drops gacha

Requisition Drops cost either 1 Requisition Scroll or 300 Blackstone for a single pull. A 10-pull (10 Scrolls or 3,000 Blackstone) guarantees a full Character rather than random shards — a meaningfully better rate than pulling one at a time.

Both currencies are generous in your first weeks and then slow down a lot, so the standard advice is to bank them rather than spend as you go: save toward 10-pulls instead of single-pulling every time you have enough for one.

Your first few weeks

Clear the campaign steadily — it's the main gate for new game modes, new Factions, and the Battle-15-ish milestone that unlocks code redemption.

Pick one Alliance (Imperial, Xenos or Chaos) to focus your first real squad around. Onslaught and Salvage Run only need a shared Alliance, not a single Faction, so this is the easiest early team-building target — see the Best Teams page for a same-Alliance starter core.

Check in on redemption codes early and often (see the Codes page) — a chunk of your early Gold, Blackstone and shard income can come from them, and they expire fast if you sit on them.

Don't spread material across many Characters at once. Ascension shards, gear, and rank-up material are all Character-specific or limited, and a half-built squad clears less content than a smaller, properly-built one.
