Warhammer 40,000: Tacticus Best Teams

A Tacticus squad is five Characters, and which ones you can mix depends on the mode: Arena and Tournament Arena let you field any Faction or Alliance together, so those squads are built purely on power; Onslaught and Salvage Run require every Character to share an Alliance (Imperial, Xenos or Chaos) but let Factions mix freely within it; Campaign missions generally lock you to a single Faction. Guild Raid has no restriction at all — it just rewards the most sustained single-target damage you can field. Check each comp's mode line before deploying it.

Arena and Tournament Arena are the only modes that let you mix any faction and any Alliance freely, so the standard approach is to just field your five hardest-hitting Characters rather than build around a faction trait. This is five of the highest, most consistently-agreed-upon single-target and area damage picks across trackers.

  • Because Arena has no faction/Alliance restriction, this comp deliberately ignores synergy — it's five of the strongest solo performers checked against current trackers.
  • Positioning still matters on the hex grid: keep Maugan Ra and Ahriman back, send Kharn/Celestine/Deathleaper forward.
  • If you're missing one of these, swap in whichever S/A-tier Character you actually own before reaching for a lower-rarity filler — Arena rewards raw power more than any other mode.

Flex / subs: Marneus Calgar in place of Celestine for a squad-wide melee buff instead of single-target mobility · The Patermine in place of Deathleaper if the match is going long — better sustain, less burst

  • Yarrick's summoned Guardsmen are disposable bodies that can soak a turn of enemy attacks in front of the rest of the line.

Guild Raid doesn't restrict you by Alliance, but it does lock you out of a boss's own Faction fight-by-fight — so "just field your five hardest hitters" only half-works here. This lineup pairs three of the hardest single-target hitters checked this pass with one snowballing sustain piece and one durable anchor, picked so the core squad is clean against 9 of the game's 12 bosses; the notes below cover the 2 fights where a swap is actually required.

  • Guild Raid scoring rewards total damage dealt more than a fast clear, so prioritize Characters that keep contributing turn after turn (Ahriman, The Patermine) over pure one-shot burst.
  • Trajann's counter-zone punishes a boss's melee adds without you needing to spend a turn on them directly.
  • No Alliance restriction applies here, but there IS a per-boss Faction lock-out (see the endgame guide's boss table) — you can't deploy a Character against a boss from that boss's own Faction. Of this squad, Maugan Ra (Aeldari) is locked out only against Avatar of Khaine, and Ahriman (Thousand Sons) only against Magnus; Kharn (World Eaters), The Patermine (Genestealer Cults) and Trajann (Adeptus Custodes) aren't locked out of any of the 12 current bosses.
  • For those 2 fights, swap in Roswitha (Adepta Sororitas — no lock-out conflict either) rather than reaching for a random alternate: her passive deals bonus damage specifically to Daemon-trait enemies, and both Avatar of Khaine and Magnus carry the Daemon trait (so does Mortarion — see the dedicated Guild Raid: Primarchs & Demigods comp for that fight specifically).

Flex / subs: Abaddon The Despoiler (Black Legion, no lock-out on the current boss roster) in place of Kharn if you need the squad-wide Chaos damage buff instead of pure personal burst · Deathleaper in place of Ahriman against a boss without adds, for a bigger single hit on the charge — but Deathleaper is Tyranids, so this swap only works outside the 3 Tyranid-locked bosses (Hive Tyrant, Screamer-Killer, Tervigon)

3 of the game's 12 Guild Raid bosses — Mortarion, Avatar of Khaine and Magnus, all Primarch/Demigod-tier — share the Daemon trait (confirmed on the wiki's own per-boss stat pages), which nothing on the general burst-squad page is built to exploit. All 3 are also the bosses with 2 supporting battles to clear first, so this lineup leans AoE instead of the burst squad's pure single-target focus. Every pick here is clean of all 3 bosses' own Faction lock-outs (Death Guard / Aeldari / Thousand Sons).

  • This isn't a separate roster investment from the general Guild Raid burst squad — it's the same idea, retargeted at the 3 fights where a Daemon-damage bonus and some AoE actually change the outcome. For the other 9 bosses, the general burst squad is the better pick.
  • The 2 supporting battles on these fights knock the main boss's health down before you engage it directly — Marneus Calgar's cluster hit is here specifically to clear those quickly rather than burning tokens on single-target picks against trash adds.
  • All 5 picks are confirmed clean of Death Guard, Aeldari and Thousand Sons — the 3 Factions locked out across these 3 bosses — so this lineup doesn't need swapping fight to fight the way the general burst squad does.

Flex / subs: Archimatos (Black Legion, also clean of all 3 lock-outs) in place of Kharn for a snowballing summon-based single-target option instead of pure personal burst

Faction War is a Tournament Arena ruleset (added in patch 1.22, confirmed on the wiki) that runs during specific events rather than every tournament — you pick a whole Faction instead of building freely, with +1 bonus points for fielding 3-4 Characters from it and +2 for fielding all 5. Genestealer Cults is the deepest mono-Faction bench on the site's roster (3 of its 5 Characters are S-tier) and lands on exactly 5, so it clears the +2 bonus outright with no loaned Common-rarity filler needed.

  • Faction War isn't always running — it's a specific Tournament Arena ruleset, confirmed on the wiki as introduced in patch 1.22. Check which ruleset the current tournament is using before building around this.
  • This is every Genestealer Cults Character on the site's roster — there's no 6th to swap in or out, which is exactly what earns the full +2 bonus rather than the partial +1 for a 3-4-Character showing.
  • The wiki notes some Factions with fewer than 5 released Characters get a lore-compliant ally loaned in for Faction War, and any missing Character is auto-loaned at Common rarity regardless of your battle rarity bid — this squad doesn't need either, since all 5 slots are real, ownable Genestealer Cults Characters.

Flex / subs: Aeldari is the next-deepest bench on the roster (6 Characters, 5 A-tier + 1 S-tier) if you'd rather field a slightly larger, more consistent Faction instead — though a 6th Character means one has to sit out to hit exactly 5

Salvage Run runs the same shared-Alliance, mixed-Faction squad rule as Onslaught, but the fight itself is different — you're racing a per-map turn limit against waves of Orks to grab falling salvage before it runs out, with one Impervious Strongbox per run that only opens to a critical hit. This crew leans on AoE and battlefield control to clear Ork mobs fast rather than the 'one strong piece per Faction' diversity approach the general Xenos Alliance comp uses.

  • Equip at least one Crit Item on this squad before a run — the map's single Impervious Strongbox (usually landing with only a couple of turns left) only opens to an actual critical hit landing on it, regardless of which Character does it.
  • Salvage tends to fall toward the far side of the map from your deployment edge, so Re'vas's ranged reach and Parasite of Mortrex's shove are here as much for map coverage as for damage.
  • This is the Xenos Alliance track specifically — swap the whole crew for an Imperial or Chaos-Alliance equivalent if you're running one of the other two tracks; the Faction-mixing rule inside the chosen Alliance is the same either way.

Flex / subs: Boss Gulgortz (Orks) in place of Snotflogga for a summon-and-speed-up kit instead of pure crowd control — see the general Xenos Alliance hunting pack for how his kit reads

  • Maugan Ra wants to stay stationary for his damage and accuracy bonus, so put him behind the melee trio (Boss Gulgortz, Deathleaper, and Aun'Shi's own melee frame).
  • Anuphet only has himself as a Mechanical unit in this specific lineup — his passive gets much stronger if you swap in more Necron Mechanical units as you unlock them.
  • Legal for any same-Alliance, mixed-Faction mode (Onslaught, Salvage Run); a single-Faction Campaign mission would need five Characters from one Xenos faction instead.

Flex / subs: Jain Zar in place of Deathleaper for multi-target melee damage plus a nearby-enemy debuff instead of pure assassination · Commander Shadowsun or Commander Farsight in place of Aun'Shi for a more ranged-focused T'au core

Every one of the game's 12 Guild Raid bosses carries the Big Target trait (checked individually against each boss's own wiki stat page, not assumed) — and Beast Slayer, a real trait on 7 Characters across the roster, is +20% melee damage plus a 10% chance to Block 20% of max health as damage against Big Targets and Vehicles specifically. That's a flat, universal damage boost this squad gets on every single Guild Raid fight, boss roster notwithstanding.

  • Beast Slayer is confirmed on the wiki's own Trait page as +20% melee damage to Big Target/Vehicle enemies plus a 10% chance to Block 20% max health as damage — and every current Guild Raid boss is confirmed Big Target, so this isn't a situational pick, it's a standing damage buff for the mode.
  • This is a melee-heavy, sustained-fight squad rather than pure one-shot burst — pair it with the general Guild Raid burst squad's philosophy (prioritize Characters who keep contributing turn after turn) over the fight's full length.
  • Faction check against the 12-boss lock-out table: Ragnar (Space Wolves), Judh (Genestealer Cults), Kariyan (Adeptus Custodes) and Titus (Ultramarines) are clean against all 12 current bosses. Snotflogga (Orks) is locked out only against Ghazghkull — swap him for another Beast Slayer pick (Commander Farsight or Tanksmasha) or a general burst pick that fight specifically.

Flex / subs: Commander Farsight (T'au Empire) also carries Beast Slayer, but is locked out against Riptide specifically — good insurance for the Ghazghkull week when Snotflogga is out · Tanksmasha also carries Beast Slayer at a lower overall tier — a budget option for this same core while any of the above are still unbuilt

  • Save your Requisition Scrolls and Blackstone for a 10-pull rather than spending them one at a time — a 10-pull guarantees a full Character instead of random shards.
  • This squad is a mixed-Faction, mixed-Alliance lineup, so it only works in modes without a Faction/Alliance restriction (Arena, Campaign chapters that don't lock you to one Faction) — check the mission requirement before deploying it.
  • Replace any slot the moment you pull or unlock a higher-tier Character in the same role — this squad is meant to be outgrown, not a long-term investment target.
  • Tournament Arena periodically runs with a rarity-bid cap (Common up to Rare, occasionally Epic for anniversary events) rather than open rarity — since every pick here is Rare or Epic, this squad stays usable in a capped TA event even well after you've outgrown it for everyday Arena.

Flex / subs: Deathleaper in place of Njal once unlocked — better damage, similar disruption role · Whichever Legendary Character Event unit you first complete should replace your weakest slot here immediately

Campaign chapters are generally locked to a single Faction, sometimes loosened to a shared Alliance — a real restriction the general Best Teams comps on this page don't account for, since Arena/Onslaught/Guild Raid all allow mixing. Ultramarines is one of the deeper single-Faction benches on the roster (6 Characters) and, fittingly, is the Faction most Indomitus-era campaign content is built around — this uses the 5 that clear the widest spread of roles rather than the single highest-tier 5.

  • This trades some raw power for role coverage — a dedicated healer (Incisus) and a mix of AoE, burst and sustained-summon damage — because campaign missions run longer and can't be won on burst alone the way a single Guild Raid attempt can.
  • Because every pick shares the Ultramarines Faction, this squad is also legal anywhere the game only loosens the restriction to 'shared Alliance' (Imperial), not just the strict single-Faction chapters.
  • If a specific chapter turns out to allow mixed-Faction Imperial squads, Trajann (Adeptus Custodes) or Commissar Yarrick (Astra Militarum) are strong drop-in upgrades over Certus, the 6th Ultramarines Character left out of this lineup.

Flex / subs: Certus in place of Varro Tigurius for a simpler single-target knockback option while you're still building Varro Tigurius up
