Overgeared Hero — beginner guide

Updated 3 September 2026

Overgeared Hero drip-feeds its systems over your first few chapters. This guide covers the early decisions that matter — built from the game's own systems and item data, reworded. For where heroes rank see the Tier List; for full backpack builds see the Backpack builds guide.

Unlock Ranger and Wizard

You start with the Rare Warrior. Ranger and Wizard unlock a little later through progression — get all three, because a run is locked to one type and you'll want the flexibility.

Every hero you own also contributes its ownership effect (a percentage HP or ATK boost) to all your runs, so unlocking and lightly ranking heroes is never wasted.

How the shop works

Each round shows four items. Buy with gold, then place and rotate them in the backpack. Refreshing the shop costs 1 gold — do it when nothing fits your plan, not every round.

Anything you buy sells back for about half. Buying an item just to merge it and selling the leftover parts is normal.

The deeper into a chapter you get, the better the odds of Epic and higher items. Early rounds are mostly Common and Uncommon — don't overspend chasing rarity in round 2.

Merge early and often

Legendary items only exist through merging — they never appear in the shop. Pick a direction in the first few rounds (poison, burn, sword-stack, spike, block) and buy the components that feed it.

Select an item and tap the book icon to see its recipe tree. On this site, each item page lists what it merges into and what makes it, and the merge-recipe reference has the full tree.

Sockets and adjacency

Items with empty circular sockets gain an extra effect when the required item type sits on the socket square — armor over Plate Armor unlocks extra Block, a weapon on a socket triggers an on-hit effect, and so on.

A backpack that fills its sockets is far stronger than the same items placed randomly. Plan the layout, don't just cram.

What to spend on first

Redeem the codes on the Codes page — free keys, gems and eggs.

Rank up the hero you play most with hero shards (Hero Dungeon is the source) — it strengthens the ownership effect and unlocks that hero's supply items.

Level your gear slots with Gear Enhancement Stones (Tower of Trials drops them). Gear is brought into every run as starting items, so it compounds.

Hatch pets from the Nest and rank up one or two good ones — the ownership ATK/HP % applies every run even when the active is on cooldown.
