Most Arena losses come from a handful of team types, and each of them needs one thing to go right: a trap to stay down, a stage to stay up, a Lumi to stay hidden. This guide takes them one at a time. For each team it says how it wins, where it breaks, and which Lumi do the breaking. Build two teams from the answers here and you will have one for most of the squads you meet.
1. Every team needs one thing to go right
Arena teams fall into three kinds of plan. Some force your Lumi to swap across traps. Some stack stages on one Lumi until it wins every trade. Some set up a single hit that ends a fight. Each kind has a weak joint, and it is the same joint every time you meet it.
Stage teams lose their work to a forced swap or to Cleansing Wind. Trap teams need a long fight and a wounded bench. One-hit teams fall apart when you remove the partner that feeds the hit. A Lumi only has to reach Lv. 40 for ranked play, so a second team built from the answers below is cheaper than it looks.
2. Trap and roar teams
How it wins: Poison Swamp and Earth Spike cost 3 Energy each and deal nothing when cast. Once both are down, every Lumi of yours that enters loses 10% of its max HP and takes 1 Poison, and a 3-Energy Dragon Roar keeps forcing new ones in. The Bluesaur Goma version is worse, because its roar picks your lowest-HP Lumi and cuts 2 DEF stages as it lands.
What beats it: Ice, first. Floragon takes 4x from Ice, and Rochelon and Bluesaur Goma take double. Rimedeer's Hail hits every enemy on the field. Heal before you swap, since the roar hunts a wounded bench: Healing Light restores 15% to the whole squad and cures every Poison stack. The plan also needs all three members, so knocking out any one of them ends it.
CrysionIce Standard100-power Ice signature, and it heals 20% on a knockout.
RimedeerIce BattleHail hits every enemy on the field.
RainbowdeerLight BattleHealing Light cures the Poison the trap leaves.
3. Dragon Rage armour break
How it wins: Charigon takes 2 DEF stages off your Lumi as it enters, Bluesaur Goma does the same to every Lumi that comes in while it is on the field, and Dragon Rage gains 25% Pierce for each stage you have lost. Three stages down, a 40-power skill hits like a finisher.
What beats it: leave. Stages reset when a Lumi switches out, so a swap on your own terms throws the cuts away. Cleansing Wind does it for the whole field for 3 Energy. Both Dragons take double from Ice and Fairy, and Unicorn halves the Dragon damage coming back.
RegaffinFlying BattleCarries Cleansing Wind.
UnicornFairy BattleFairy: halves Dragon damage and hits both Dragons for double.
4. Fortify stall
How it wins: Rainbowdeer cuts your ATK 2 stages on entry and heals the squad, which buys Stellalibra the turns to cast Fortify, a 3-Energy skill that adds an ATK and a DEF stage each time. Psykat waits on the bench to heal the first Lumi that drops below half and put your attacker to sleep.
What beats it: a forced swap. Every Fortify stage is lost the moment Stellalibra leaves the field, and a roar costs 3 Energy. Cleansing Wind wipes them too. Fire hits Stellalibra for double, and Loongster's Rough Spot is half Fire while Loongster takes a quarter from Steel. This team wins often on the way up and much less from Star rank on, where most squads carry one of those answers.
LoongsterWater / Fire BattleHalf of Rough Spot is Fire.
Bluesaur GomaDragonA 3-Energy roar wipes every stage.
5. The MEGA TOMATO closer
How it wins: Rainbowdeer and Clionia soak the early turns, then MEGA TOMATO enters in Stealth. Until one of your skills hits it, its crit rate is raised and TOMATO Laser crits for 350% damage. Each knockout gives it Energy for the next one.
What beats it: hit it with a skill at once, any skill, because that ends Stealth. Light hits MEGA TOMATO for double and Ice does the same to Clionia, so one Light Lumi and one Ice Lumi cover two of its three members. Radibun also halves the Dark damage coming back.
RadibunLight StandardLight for MEGA TOMATO, and it halves Dark.
CrysionIce StandardIce for Clionia.
6. The Goma Pounce pair
How it wins: Goma Pounce drains Little Red Peach's HP bar and gains 20% damage for every 10% it takes, so a full bar triples an 80-power hit. She keeps the bar full with Sweet Peach, and her squad heals 5% whenever a skill lands on her.
What beats it: the pounce costs 5 Energy and a roar costs 3, so roar Big Bad Goma off before it fires. A roar that drags Little Red Peach in lets you wear her bar down, and every 10% she is missing is 20% off the hit. Sanctify takes 2 ATK stages off for 3 Energy. Against the all-collab version, Frost Crystal traps pay off: each Frostbite stack adds 15 power to every skill that hits the carrier.
FloragonGrass / Dragon BattleDragon Roar for 3 Energy.
RimedeerIce BattleCarries Frost Crystal.
7. Flicker and Unicorn teams
How it wins: every Flicker skill its casters fire makes Unicorn's Rainbow Convergence 1 Energy cheaper, from 7 down to 2. Late in a fight Unicorn throws a 100-power skill every turn.
What beats it: speed and status. Dark and Steel hit Unicorn for double. Hypnotize pins the lead in place, since an Asleep Lumi can't be switched out by hand, and Poison wears the stallers down while they build. Magic Trick swaps Flicker effects and counts with the enemy for 3 Energy, so the discount they built becomes yours.
MuskyxDark BattleDark, with Poison on its signature.
PsykatPsychic BattleHypnotize stops the rotation.
InfernadraFire StandardBurn, Leech and a DEF cut in one cast.
8. Ice and Frostbite teams
How it wins: Rimedeer sets Snow, which turns Ice Shard into 3 Frostbite a cast. At 5 stacks Crysion's Frost Claw makes your skills cost 3 more Energy, and each stack adds 15 power to every skill that hits you.
What beats it: Fire, Steel and Brawler all hit Ice for double. Flamblades is both Fire and Steel and takes half from Ice, and Lycanite takes half too. Frost Claw only works while Crysion is on the field, so a roar switches it off, and any other weather replaces the Snow.
FlambladesFire / Steel BattleFire and Steel, and it resists Ice.
LycaniteSteel BattleSteel hitter that resists Ice.
9. Hand-off setup teams
How it wins: Sandlord casts Gloves Off for 2 stages at 3 Energy a time, then switches out, and Parting Gift hands every stage to a hitter such as Flamblades.
What beats it: Parting Gift only fires on a switch the player chooses. Roar Sandlord out and the stages are lost. If the hand-off has already happened, Cleansing Wind resets the receiver, or Mimic copies its stages for 2 Energy. Sandlord has 85 HP and takes double from Water, Grass, Ice and Brawler, so a fast attacker can knock it out mid-setup, and Zaphound's entry Paralysis slows its attacks by 10% a stack while it tries.
FloragonGrass / Dragon BattleA roar passes nothing on.
ZaphoundElectric BattleParalyses on entry, 110 ATK.
10. Quick reference
One line per team, for when you are short on time. If you only build one answer first, make it an Ice Lumi, since it beats the trap teams you will meet most.
